Hermetic books show to the soul the way of theurgic liberation. As a means of spiritual ascension, theurgy itself is a part of the esoteric Egyptian, Chaldean and Hellenic heritage. However, Damascius proposes a theory that theurgy originates strictly in Egypt. Hermeticists themselves often compared their teachings to sacred mysteries. This knowledge had to be kept secret, as it could only be passed on through initiation.
