Earthly ignorance can be eliminated on the spur of the moment if the student suddenly realizes his divine nature and fully accepts God; however, such enlightenment is very rare. Usually, the process of rebirth lasts a lifetime and takes place only after the death of the physical body. This rebirth is followed by a divine revelation. NHC VI.6 and CH XIII describe an initiation during which Hermes witnesses a deity that manifests in the form of intellectual light. Hermes merges with this light and, in a way, becomes a part of it. He witnesses the primordial source of all life, which cannot be conveyed through speech:
Let every creature in the cosmos give ear to this hymn. Open, Earth.
Let the rains pour without restraint.
Trees, be not shaken.
I am about to praise the Lord of creation, the All and the One. Open heavens;
Winds, be still.
Let God’s immortal sphere receive my song. (CH XIII.17)
