Delivered in London at the Royal Asiatic Society, 28 November 2009, this was the third of a series of three lectures sponsored by the Matheson Trust in commemoration of the centenary of the birth of Dr Martin Lings. The previous two lectures were delivered by Prof Keith Critchlow and Prof Seyyed Hossein Nasr.
